As we all know, Supergirl's TV show for six seasons drew inspiration from the Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve films (Superman I and II).

It's my sad duty to announce (per EW) that Richard Donner, who directed those films along with The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, passed away at age 91

Long before superhero films took over the industry and fans clamored for the Snyder Cut, Donner had a bit of experience with both. He directed the original Superman film, starring Christopher Reeve. The film would spawn a number of sequels, but a dispute among Superman II's producers eventually led to him being uncredited and leaving the film, although much of his work stayed in the finished product. Eventually, in 2006, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut was released.

Donner's production company confirmed the news of his passing to EW, however a cause of death was not given.

Rest In (Super) Power, Mr. Donner. You made us all believe a man could fly.

Yes indeed, for a (our) generation he did make us believe a man could fly. Donner's vision for the Superman mythos is the gold standard.

Rest In peace, Richard, you've earned it.

Indeed the gold standard. I think 2017's Wonder Woman is awfully close to it.
