I just wanted to let you guys know that you may not be hearing from me for a while after tomorrow. Hurricane Irma is headed straight for South Florida, and it seems likely that we will be losing power and internet connectivity for at least a few days. (The public library will probably be the first place around to get the internet back, and they offer it as a free service.)

But I've been thinking that maybe I ought to write a story over the coming hurricane-filled weekend in which Supergirl helps rescue victims of the approaching storm (including pets) and bring them to safety. I mean, it doesn't always have to be evil aliens or criminal masterminds like Lex Luthor, right? Winds approaching 185 miles per hour and nearly-continuous million-volt lightning discharges could constitute quite a challenge to a superhero, too. Hey, Mother Nature can be just as nasty as Brainiac or Luthor at times! If we lose power, I guess I'll have to write this with pencil and paper, though, the way we did it in "the old days" :)

At any rate, you will be hearing from me after the storm passes - just not sure how long after!

OK - the track of Hurricane Irma has definitely shifted to the west now, and won't be that bad here in Boynton Beach. In fact, the latest maps show Palm Beach Co. as being outside of the "cone of error". That means we'll certainly be getting tropical storm conditions on Sunday, but not the actual hurricane-force winds. We're not out of the woods, by any means - but things are looking a whole lot better now than they did this morning for those of us in Southeast Florida...

"Will certainly enjoy reading your story whenever you write it."

Well, as long as I have the time - and an internet connection - why don't I start it now!

Scene One

Kara and Alex are sitting together on the couch in front of a wide-screen TV in Kara's apartment. They are eating pizza and drinking Corona beer, while watching TV coverage of Hurricane Irma making landfall in Florida...

Kara (clearly concerned and disturbed by the events on-screen): Alex, I have to go help those people! Especially the ones we met when we were in Florida last year - like that young TV actress, Alicia Gomez..

Alex (clearly horrified): Kara, are you crazy? You can't just go flying straight into a category 4 hurricane - with winds of 165 miles per hour! Even an intercontinental ballistic missile would be knocked off-track by that! You'd be knocked around the same way a commercial airliner would.... And what about the continuous lightning we're seeing? Each of those bolts is carrying several million volts.... Hey, LiveWire nearly killed you, and the amount of energy she can generate is nothing compared to a cat 4 hurricane!

Kara (disappointed): Yeah - I guess you're right ... but I've got do something to help...

Alex: I have an idea! Why not just wait until Monday, after the storm has passed through South Florida? Then it will be safe to fly down there - if you go pretty far to the south, and then turn north. There will be plenty of people in flooded, low-lying areas who would be incredibly grateful if you flew them out of there!

Kara (smiling): And their pets, too!.... Alex, that's a great idea! And I'm sure James would love it, because I could write up first-person accounts of the rescue operations for the Tribune and CatCo Magazine!..

Alex (interjecting): And I'm sure that some of the people you met in Palm Beach Co. would be more than happy to have you a house guest!

Kara (smiling): Sure - the principal of the school where I appeared in that assembly would probably love to have Supergirl stay over for a few days! I'm sure her daughter would be totally thrilled!.... Yes, I think that's what I'll do! ... (picks up her cell phone)... Here, let me call James, and run the idea by him....

If you cannot leave the state, stay safe and hunker down. May the damage and loss of life not be as severe as in the Caribbean. My thoughts and prayers go to all affected by this beast.

Thanks for all your kind words, folks!

I am pleased to be able to report that the track of the hurricane has moved even further to the west now. All of Palm Beach Co. is now outside of the area of hurricane-force winds. It looks like we are just going to get a tropical storm (with less than hurricane-force winds), but one that will last for 48 hours! I just hope we don't lose power and our internet connection..

Yes, I'm OK! I'm at the public library in Boynton Beach - the first place to have internet service back. (It was the same way after the last hurricanes about 12 years ago.) We have power back now, but still no landline telephones, cable TV, or internet!
This storm had stronger winds than I've ever experienced before - gusts up to 80-90 mph - but less rain. No problems with flooding around here.
And yes, I finished the "Supergirl helps the hurricane victims" story over our "long extended power outage weekend"! I'll post in the Forum shortly :)
